Rookaby speaks 42 languages

Stories, spoken instructions and character voices in your child's language. Choose the language of the app and the spoken language separately in Settings.

What it does

Six characters who live on a board, and a voice that explains them.

Your child meets the pieces the way a picture book introduces its cast: one at a time, by name and by sound. The six were made for Rookaby.

Meet the pieces

Tap a piece to hear its name and its sound. Sort the set by colour or by shape, take turns on a free board, and put every piece home by its picture. This first stage is free, and it is complete: nothing in it is a sample of something else.

A story for every piece

The first unlock opens one story per piece, explaining why it moves the way it does, with a small game after each. It also opens Walk together, where your child sets each piece on the board and takes turns with a friend, all in the app.

Then the real moves

Around four, the rules of the game arrive: how you take a piece, how a king gets out of trouble, and what catching him for good looks like. They come as puzzles and never as a match. Every board has an answer worked out before your child sees it, so there is no position to get stuck in and no opponent to lose to.

Common questions →

Alive, in colour

Every piece breathes, blinks and looks at your child. Touch one and it answers the instant the finger lands; while its line is spoken, its mouth moves. If your child pauses, one piece glows and a little hand shows where to tap. It all switches off with Reduce Motion.

Each character stands on its own bright colour and the background stays calm, so the colour goes to the things to touch and never to the wallpaper. The studies behind those choices are listed inside the app, in plain language.

Wooden toy pieces live among trees, flowers and drifting clouds. Large pictures lead to the activities. Tap a piece to hear it speak, then play together on a board that fits the screen.

Short activities, shared with you

The watch mode ends on its own and nothing plays next. There are no points or streaks, and the turn-taking game puts you beside your child. Choose a short session that fits your family. The AAP and WHO sources informing these choices are listed behind the grown-up's door; they do not endorse this app.
